The artifact created in TEC-530: Ethics, Culture, and Equity with Technology, is a proposal that works to put the needs of the educators first. By surveying teachers and having them work collaboratively to create meaningful and useful resources that they can use immediately in the classroom. The proposal invites teachers to a general session, then to breakout rooms by grade level, where they will be joined by a coach to address how digital tools and technology can enhance and improve student learning at their grade level.

Rationale

This artifact represents ISTE standard 5 in that when creating professional development opportunities, coaches must be willing to determine the needs of their educators, and be willing to not only meet those needs, but also facilitate meaningful learning opportunities, while taking time to provide feedback and allow educators to make meaning of the learning. Further, the purpose of professional development is to have a positive impact on student learning, so encouraging educators to embrace ISTE Standards is necessary to positively impact student success.

The presentation, created for TEC-544: Leadership and Technology Coaching, models expectations for coaches and administrators (and other stakeholders) who are planning to present new technology and digital tools for educators to use in the classroom. Because educators are professionals, there are specific ways to deliver professional development to engage learners and respect their expertise at the same time. The presentation shares ideas for how to properly plan and present a professional development day.

By meeting teacher needs, professional development sessions will be more meaningful and effective.
